Hamilton Member of the Month October 2024 - Dante D.
Tell us about yourself!
My name is Dante Duarte. I was born in Brazil and moved to Canada in 2020 after living in the United States for a while. I work as a physician in the geriatric field. I have been training at Alchemy and competing in triathlons since early 2022.
What got you into CrossFit?
I was looking for a workout that was dynamic and engaging, something where I could enjoy the process, not just focus on the results. I wanted a regimen that would help strengthen multiple muscle groups to support my triathlon training and prevent injuries. That’s when I discovered CrossFit, and now I love both triathlon and CrossFit training. The two have a great synergy that keeps me active, improves my quality of life, and helps prevent injuries caused by weak muscles.
What do you like about Alchemy?
I really appreciate the coaches, the facility, and the training. I always feel excited stopping by Alchemy after work and getting to train before heading home. It’s a great way to end my day.
What has been your proudest moment at Alchemy?
My proudest moment was finishing with one of the top times in the Alchemy Endurance Loop.
What are your CrossFit goals for the future?
My main goal is to stay fit and strengthen all muscle groups, especially those that protect the knees.
If you could design the perfect workout, what would it include?
I’d stick with the workouts we do at Alchemy but add more cardio, like cycling and swimming—basically a CrossFit/triathlon hybrid. That would be my ideal!
What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in yourself since you started CrossFit?
Before CrossFit and triathlon, I struggled with knee pain and visited multiple specialists. My main sport was running, but turning 40 made me reflect on what I truly enjoyed and how I could strengthen my legs to reduce pain. CrossFit combined with rriathlon training revolutionized my body and muscle strength. Now, I can complete an Olympic-distance triathlons with little to no knee pain.
When you’re not at the gym, what’s your favourite thing to do?
I love watching soccer with a cold beer and spending time with my kids and wife :)
What’s your favorite local Hamilton food spot?
The Keg! I’m a big fan of barbecue, and The Keg is hands down my favourite restaurant.
