MEMBER SPOTLIGHT: TOM SMITH
What has been your proudest Alchemy moment to date?
Improvements sneak up on me and it’s hard for me to pick one. This winter I completed 2 reps of clean and jerks, or it was more some kind of a S2OH at a weight that I had failed to clean less than a year before. I had vowed I would come back to that weight.
Do you currently have a fitness related goal you are chasing?
After I injured my arm my goal post injury is to be active and minimize any complications and losses in strength, get the arm back to 100% and be ready for 25.1, plus as always, linking double unders.
What movement have you grown to love?
I have never been comfortable with weight overhead. With consistent coaching and my effort I have become confident with the movements that put weight over my head such as , push press, push jerks, clean and jerk, and the snatch.
If you could design the perfect workout, what would it include?
I would make a chipper with rowing and barbell cycling, and Avery. It would include Avery for entertainment.
When you’re not at the gym, what’s your favourite thing to do?
I’ll be at the cottage. Any season; sledding, boating, biking, playing games, or working on something in the shop. I should mention Sledding twice.
What outside of Alchemy, motivates your hard work and consistency?
I need to be fit for my career, but more importantly I lead a healthy active lifestyle so I can harass my family for many years to come.
If you could only listen to one song during a workout, what would it be?
I start almost every workout with Everlong by Foo Fighters.
What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in yourself since you started CrossFit?
For many years I was involved with an Association that required a lot of attention and dedication, many days my gym time would be sacrificed. CrossFit has helped me to prioritize myself, be present and consistent.
What’s your favourite Brantford area food spot?
I have a big appetite and am always looking for new suggestions. I frequent Drongkowski’s Deli in St George, hi Sushi, and never miss a Ribfest.
