Hamilton Member of the Month for February 2025 - Owen Mallouhi
Tell us about yourself!
I’m Owen, a fitness enthusiast who loves a good challenge! Originally from Damascus, I’ve lived in several countries before settling in Hamilton, where I work in Organizational Development at HHS. I’m passionate about fitness, CrossFit, running, and recently intrigued by HYROX training.
What got you into CrossFit?
I struggled to stick with traditional gyms—they just didn’t inspire me. CrossFit changed that completely. The workouts are always entertaining, varied, and full of engaging challenges. What really hooked me is the energy of the classes—there’s nothing like pushing through tough workouts alongside others who are just as determined. It’s motivating and keeps me coming back for more.
What do you like about Alchemy?
What I love most about Alchemy is the coaches. They’re incredibly knowledgeable, supportive, and always bring great energy to every class. They take the time to ensure everyone is moving safely and effectively while pushing us to reach our full potential. Their encouragement and personalized feedback make all the difference and create an environment where you feel both challenged and supported.
What has been your proudest moment at Alchemy?
I definitely have more humbling moments than proud ones—like realizing burpees don’t get easier no matter how many you do! But one proud moment that stands out was hitting my PR in the hang power clean during the Oak complex training. Shoutout to Andy for his advice—turns out listening to the coach actually works!
What are your CrossFit goals for the future?
My main goal is to build a stronger "engine," so I can power through high-intensity workouts with more stamina. Beyond that, staying injury-free and maintaining consistency are top priorities— what’s the point of crushing a workout if I can’t show up the next day!!
If you could design the perfect workout, what would it include?
My perfect workout would have squat cleans, toes-to-bar, and running. Sunday’s are the best, whether it’s the long endurance grind or my new favorite, the compilation training. Basically, all the fun stuff that leaves you questioning your life choices mid-workout.
What's the biggest change you've seen in yourself since you started CrossFit?
The biggest change has been my mindset. CrossFit has taught me to embrace discomfort and see challenges as opportunities to grow, not just in fitness but in life.
When you're not at the gym, what's your favorite thing to do?
When I’m not at the gym, I’m usually at home being a personal entertainer for my six cats, That includes dangling toys, refereeing their wrestling matches, or trying to reclaim my spot on the couch, It’s a full-time gig.
What’s your favorite local Hamilton food spot?
Tomah is hands down one of my favorite food spots in Hamilton! Their falafel sandwich is absolutely amazing—crispy, flavorful, and perfectly wrapped, not to mention that it is heart-shaped. And don’t even get me started on the Kibbeh beef... YUM YUM YUM.. it’s out of this world. The staff are incredibly kind and always make you feel right at home. They’re so generous too; they’ll often throw in a little something extra just to brighten your day. If you haven’t been, you’re seriously missing out!
