Member Spotlight: MJ Mather

Tell us about yourself!

Hey, I’m MJ!  I’ve been a member at Alchemy for 2 years and have loved every minute. I grew up in Northern Ontario and lived in Brazil before settling down here in Brantford. I’m mom to two incredible kids, and a French Bulldog. I speak four languages and am currently working towards my master’s degree in public safety & security.

What got you into CrossFit?

Have spent years running, swimming, and weightlifting, I felt it was time to get out of my comfort zone. Someone suggested CrossFit, and anyone I spoke to locally said Alchemy was the place to go (they weren’t wrong). I joined to push my fitness goals, I had no idea how strong the community itself was. From day one I was always made to feel welcome by both coaches and members. I remember being so nervous my first few weeks being the newbie and not knowing anyone, now I love every single class and getting to laugh, motivate, and support each other.

What’s been your proudest moment at Alchemy?

There’s been so many personal victories during my time at Alchemy, but nothing has made me happier then pushing others to step outside their comfort zone; try out special WODs like Murph or Chad, or just adding a few extra pounds on their bar. Sure, personal victories are great, but motivating others to succeed at something they didn’t think was possible is way better!!
What’s your perfect workout?

Assault bike, DB cleans & devils presses!! (AKA – you never want me to program a class haha)

What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in yourself since you started CrossFit?

Although I can’t deny the physical changes I’ve seen, the most remarkable change would be my own confidence. I’m the most extroverted introvert you’ll ever meet (shocking I know), yet somehow since starting CrossFit, I’ve developed this level of confidence that’s changed every aspect of my life. I challenge myself in ways I didn’t know possible, I’ve formed incredible relationships, and all while winning battles against my own self-doubts.
When you’re not at the gym, what’s your favourite thing to do?

If I’m not hiking with my kids or walking the dog, you can usually find me browsing the library for a good book to curl up with. Board game nights with friends aren’t terrible either.

What’s your favourite local Brantford spot? (Restaurant, brewery, cafe etc)

Sociable. Fish Tacos. ‘nuff said.
