Tell us about yourself!

I’m a 48 year old high school technology teacher. I worked in the software development industry for about 15 years before changing careers for a move to teaching. I live in Hamilton with my wife and two kids.

What got you into CrossFit?

My wife joined Alchemy first, and she loved it. She convinced me to try it out and I loved it too. We’ve since convinced our kids to join as well.

What do you like about Alchemy?

I love the variety in the workouts and how supportive the coaches and community are. If you’re not able to do a certain exercise, you’re always given lots of alternatives which are still challenging and help you work towards the goal of doing the harder movement.

What has been your proudest moment at Alchemy?

My proudest moment was probably getting comfortable doing overhead squats. I think there’s still lots of room to increase the weight I’m lifting in this exercise, but it was a big challenge in terms of my flexibility to get to the point that I could actually do the movement, so I’m proud of that.

What are your CrossFit goals for the future?

I’d like to increase my deadlift and back squat weights.  And maybe eventually get double-unders…

If you could design the perfect workout, what would it include?

Lots of heavy back squats and deadlifts…. no burpees!

What’s the biggest change you’ve seen in yourself since you started CrossFit?

I’ve lost a bunch of weight since starting Crossfit, but the biggest change I’ve noticed is probably in my flexibility. I’m still by no means flexible, but I’ve made a lot of progress in this area, and I’m still seeing increasing range of motion in lots of different parts of my body.

When you’re not at the gym, what’s your favourite thing to do?

My kids are both very active in sports, so watching them practice and play is really fun for me. I’m learning to play the guitar, so that has been a fun and humbling thing to do. I also love spending time with my family and relaxing at our cottage in Quebec.

What’s your favourite local Hamilton food spot?

My favourite local restaurant would be Rapscallion or Mesa.
